A groundbreaking study of skateboarding culture that explores the lives of underrepresented young adult skateboarders within a society that isolates them due to their negative misconceptions and preconceived notions. The research team examined skateboarding culture through the skateboarders’ perception of life and reveals how skateboarding shapes and supports them in terms of personal development.

A mid-project preliminary report from the Beyond the Board: Skateboarding, Schools, and Society study. This white paper provides context for the larger study following the initial round of data-gathering that entailed interviews with over 100 skateboarders in East Los Angeles, Gallup, Detroit, Houston, and the Boston area, and a national survey of skateboarders that attracted 3,000 respondents from across the US.
